Standing for Granville
Meet people where they are.
Help should begin with your circumstances and what would make a difference to you.
I’ve learned that if you want to help someone, you have to understand the life they are actually living. I want to meet people where they are and work on the things that would give them and their children a better life.
Who is Sal El Kheir?
Begin with people’s lives.
I’ve worked in retail since I was young. Over the years, people have spoken to me across the counter about far more than their shopping. They’ve told me about work, their children and how hard it has become to make ends meet. When you serve people for long enough, you learn how much of their life they bring through the door.
Those conversations have stayed with me. They’ve taught me to begin with the person in front of me: what is making life difficult, and what would actually help? That is how I want to serve Granville. I’m Sal El Kheir, and I’m standing because I want people and their children to have more room to live well.
Why I’m standing
Meeting people where they are means taking their circumstances seriously. A parent working long hours still needs help when their child falls behind. Someone who is unwell needs care they can reach and afford. I want to carry those everyday concerns into Parliament and keep asking whether the decisions made there are making life better here.
“When someone tells you they are struggling, they are trusting you with something. I take that seriously.”
What Granville is facing
Start with what people are living through.
I will start with what people are living through, then pursue the decisions and funding that can change it.
01 Cost of living
A pay packet should cover a life.
The weekly budget leaves little room for anything to go wrong. In the ABS’s 2021 Granville electorate profile, more than one in three renter households spent over 30% of their income on rent. That pressure reaches everything else a family needs.
I will press for more social and affordable housing, effective renter protections and help that reaches households struggling with essential bills.
02 Education
Give children the help to catch up.
A child struggling to read needs help early, before every other lesson becomes harder. Granville East Public School’s reporting shows the value of small-group tuition and the need to keep that help consistent. A parent’s ability to pay for tutoring should never decide whether their child catches up.2
I will push for sustained reading and numeracy support in local schools, with early checks, small-group teaching and clear updates to parents about their child’s progress.
03 Healthcare
Care you can reach and afford.
Having hospitals nearby is only part of access to healthcare. Families also need timely appointments, care outside working hours and help finding the right service. Regional community consultations support stronger urgent care and care closer to home.3
I will seek stronger community health services, including through Merrylands Community Health Centre, and better access to after-hours care. I will work with local GPs and federal representatives to protect and expand bulk billing where gaps remain.5, 6
04 Getting around
More time for the people you love.
Getting around matters too. The government’s February 2026 traffic review identifies the Parramatta Road, Woodville Road and Church Street junction for improvement. An early design contract has been awarded for the Church Street off-ramp. Residents deserve to know when that work will make their journeys safer and easier.4
I will pursue clear funding and delivery dates for the local road improvements already identified, reliable public transport, and schools and shared spaces that grow with our neighbourhoods.
what changed.
I will keep residents informed about what I have asked for, what response I have received and what still needs to happen.
If a problem remains, it stays on my desk.
